A California high school’s football games have been forfeited for the remainder of the season after some players were caught on video acting out a “slave auction” of their Black teammates.
Doreen Osumi, the Yuba City Unified School District superintendent says because the students involved were suspended and, the varsity football team at River Valley High School will no longer have enough players to compete, thus causing the team to forfeiture the reminder of the season according to CNN.
The students punished for their role in an “unfortunate and extremely distressing incident,” Osumi said, adding that the event violated the student-athlete code of conduct. School officials became aware of the video on Sept. 29.
“Re-enacting a slave sale as a prank tells us that we have a great deal of work to do with our students so they can distinguish between intent and impact,” Osumi said CNN reported.
